Cornucopia Centerpiece Three Ways

A cornucopia centerpiece for Thanksgiving day is both a fitting and an elegant solution for the dinning table.

The Cornucopia

The cornucopia is a popular Thanksgiving decoration. But why?

They say that the cornucopia is mentioned in Roman mythology. Apparently, Zeus was playing a bit too roughly with some poor goat and he broke off one of the goat’s horns. Instead of just apologizing for his clumsiness Zeus instead decided to add insult to injury. Rather than trying to reattach the horn to the poor goat’s head Zeus instead had it filled with food. Interesting choice, in my opinion.

Anyway, cornucopia in Latin is cornu copiae which translates into horn of abundance. Being thankful for abundance is the main theme of thanksgiving. So naturally all of these elements were put together and there you have it – the thanksgiving cornucopia. Thank you Mr. Goat.

A Soft And Delicate Cornucopia Centerpiece

This is definitely the softest and most elegant of the three centerpieces. If you like calm and pretty then this is the cornucopia arrangement for you.

Supplies You Will Need

  • Wicker cornucopia painted white
  • Dark Pink Dahlias (Found these at Michael’s)
  • White Mumms (Dollar Tree)
  • Ivory Zinnias (Dollar Tree)
  • Eucalyptus Leaves (Dollar Tree)
  • Lambs Ear (Michael’s)
  • White Fall Leaf (Dollar Tree)

How To Make A Soft And Delicate Cornucopia Centerpiece

Place a few stems of lambs ear at the bottom of the cornucopia. Follow this by adding some larger, dark pink lilies. Best bit: just stick these all in. No hot glue needed.

Finish the look off with a few faux off white zinnias, white mum blooms, a couple ivy leaves, an off white fall leaf, and a couple of eucalyptus leaves.

Next, add a couple of faux pumpkins. I chose to use pumpkins that I had painted with two shades of grey chalk paint and one in white.

To accompany the larger cornucopia you may want to make a couple of smaller versions. You can place these individually around the house as table top decor or you can spread them out on the dining room table and use them as a one long centerpiece.

Moody Blues Cornucopia Centerpiece

This cornucopia is for those of you that love the deep, rich colours of fall. I recently posted a twinkly lit, pumpkin patch wreath that used these same faux floral colours and it turned out so majestic looking. The two would go really well together.

Supplies You Will Need

  • Purple Mumms
  • Navy Blue Iris Stems
  • Dark Blue and Purple Hydrangeas
  • Dark Pink Zinnias
  • Eucalyptus Leaves
  • Lilac Coloured Fall Leaves
  • Mini Pumpkins

Stick stems of eucalyptus, faux leaves, and fall grasses into the bottom of the cornucopia. Again, no hot glue needed.

Bunch together a few purple mumms, blue hydrangea, and navy blue iris blooms together and stuff them into the cornucopia.

Finish the whole arrangement off with a few faux pumpkins and a couple of faux dark pink zinnia blooms.

So pretty. The rich jewel tones in this arrangement is striking and makes quite the visual impact.

Sunburst Cornucopia Centerpiece

These cornucopias are for those of you who love the traditional colours of fall. You are attracted to the intense, brilliant reds, oranges, purples, and yellows. You tend to lean towards a more rustic style. And you want it beautiful but you also want it simple and classic.

Supplies You Will Need

  • Large Yellow Sunflowers with Olive Leaves
  • Large Red Sunflower with Olive Leaves
  • Yellow, Red, and Orange Mumms
  • Fall Grasses
  • Mini pumpkins painted with ArtMinds Chalk Paint in White

How To Make Sunburst Cornucopia Centerpiece

Start by adding fall grasses and a couple of large olive coloured leaves. The large sunflowers from Dollarama came with these large olive leaves. So I cut off the bloom heads and the leaves and used them both. By separating the leaves and the blooms from the stems I was able arrange them exactly as I wanted.

Add a few large sunflowers and then fill in any holes in the arrangement with bright yellow, orange, and red mumms. Add another olive leaf or two and a white pumpkin and you are done.

To accompany the larger cornucopia you may want to make a couple of smaller versions. You can place these individually around the house as table top decor or you could spread them out on the dining room table and use them as one long centerpiece.
